抄録

2014 年、学研の「10 歳までに読みたい世界名作」シリーズ出版において、19 世紀米文学の名作『若草物語』（ルイザ・メイ・オルコット作）の編訳をする機会に恵まれた。Little Women という原題のこの物語は、日本ではA tale of young grass という意味の、『若草物語』というタイトルで翻訳されている。1934 年の矢田津世子の抄訳出版と、キャサリン・ヘップバーン主演のキューカー監督作品である映画（1933 年アメリカ）の公開時に吉屋信子によって選ばれた、と言われるこの邦題について考察し、命名の理由についての仮説を立ててみた。

In 2014, I was given an opportunity by Gakken Co. to edit and translate a great piece of American literature from the 19th century, Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott. In Japan, this novel has been published under the name of Wakakusamonogatari, which means A Tale of Young Grass. It is said that this title first appeared in 1934, when Yada Tsuseko’s abridged translation was published and George Dewey Cukor’s movie, starring Katharine Hepburn, produced in 1933 in USA, was released in Japan. I examine this Japanese title selected by Yoshiya Nobuko and formulate a hypothesis about the reason for its naming.
