Abstract

This paper focuses on Gion Matsuri (1968, directed by Tetsuya Yamanouchi), which was planned and made as a commemorative film for the 100th anniversary of the Kyoto Prefectural Government. Gion Matsuri was groundbreaking in that it was a film made outside the framework of the major motion picture companies, but at the same time it was a film in which the interests and political agendas of multiple organizations intersected. Daisuke Ito, original director of the film, had been conceiving the idea of this film for more than ten years, but due to various pressures and conflicts, he decided to quit the job in the middle of the shooting. Immediately after the film's release, Daisuke Ito contributed an article to a filmmagazine about the situations behind the film, to which the two screenwriters who had been criticized by Ito responded, and the long and winding 'Gion Matsuri controversy' broke out. There have been several previous studies on 'Gion Matsuri controversy' but this paper tries to re-examine this controversy, and reconsider the film Gion Matsuri from the perspective of Daisuke Ito's authorship.
