“Contact Situations, Participants, and Interactions : Language Management in Contact Situations vol.9" Report on Research Project No.238

The aim of this paper is to report the project work activities by beginner level students ofJapanese in the past four years in which they requested catalogues by telephone in Japanese,and to consider feedback application to classroom instruction of Japanese based on the problems revealed by the analysis of the conversational data of their activities building on Neustupn?(1995)'s framework. To a beginner level student of Japanese who clearly lacks bothverbal and non-verbal resources, it is necessary to give some understanding of basic structureswhich can allow them to participate in contact situations. In order to do this, it is necessary to assemble the characteristics of each situation in which the student may find themselves, and do some preliminary input so that the student can visualize each situation by themselves and hence reduce potential problems to the minimum. Thus, after the practice and application of Japanese language education, it is then possible to examine how students language patterns have developed and changed, from which overall educational effectiveness can be tested, in turn helping to lead to the construction of a more systematic and organized curriculum.
