Abstract

Social media such as Facebook and Twitter has been rapidly expanding over the past few years and the number of users reached about 1 billion in 2012 all over the world. Users can mutually communicate their friends or general public by social media. Unlike other existing media on Internet, users easily disclose their personal information for the purpose of connecting with other users on social media. Along with the rapid growth, each user may have various manners or norms on social media. However, the answer to “What kind of norm do users have?” or “Do they actually behave according to the norms?” is not given. The aim of this study is to clarify university students’ norms and actual behavior on Twitter. In November 2012, the authors conducted questionnaire survey for students of 13 universities in Japan. The result shows that each user has their own behavioral norms, especially many users are strongly conscious about privacy and copyright on Twitter. Moreover it was found that the norms are different by gender, although frequency of use does not affected users’ norms.
