Abstract

In recent years, child abuse has become a social problem in Japan, and measures to prevent it have become an urgent issue. In this study, we focused on parenting styles to approach factors related to the parents. Regarding parenting styles, Baumrind (1967) classified parenting styles into responsiveness and control. This study aimed to investigate what kind of social support and child-rearing feelings are related to what kind of parenting styles. To this end, responsiveness and control scale scores were divided into high and low groups on average and classified into four groups. Using one way ANOVA, the results showed that positive feelings toward child-rearing were significantly lower in the low-response/high-control group than in the other groups. Regarding the child-rearing burden, the low-response/high-control group was significantly higher than the high-response/low-control group. Additionally, the emotional and informational support from grandparents was significantly lower in the low-response/high-control group than in the high-response/high-control group. The results suggested that the low-response/high-control group had worse mental health and it is difficult to obtain support from grandparents. It is necessary to clarify the characteristics of mothers with low responsiveness and high control.
