Abstract
In this paper, I discuss the historical folk songs of the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, examining their positioning in the social and cultural context in the era of the Peopleʼs Republic of China. In particular, I clarify the contents of folk songs touching on historical events that actually took place in southern Xinjiang from the nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth century, as well as historical figures who were active during that time; I also study how these contents have been interpreted and given meaning. Building on this, I analyze the contents of historical songs recorded in the Qing period having themes similar to those published in the PRC era, comparing and contrasting them to examine how they have been interpreted and evaluated. As a result, I find that the descriptions on the historical folk songs in the PRC era, despite greater regulation determined by the political and social conditions peculiar to the PRC state, have been strongly influenced by activities related to the Uyghursʼ own ethnic history and culture, as realized after Chinaʼs economic reform.
