Abstract

A reasonable cultivation management system is necessary to realize high production and high quality of sugarcane by grasping the growth and soil conditions. Total nitrogen (TN) was measured from the dried and the green leaves by using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) in this study, and a handy nutritional diagnosis system was developed. Good accuracies were obtained as the results of making and validating the TN calibration equations for each of the dried and the green leaves, respectively. The possibility to shorten and simplify remarkably the nutritional diagnosis was shown. Moreover, the same TN calibration curve was made to apply to both the dried and green leaves. A value of standard error of prediction was 0.16% for the green leaf’s TN calibration curve using the wave length 2138nm as the first component that showed the highest correlation for the dried leaf. Therefore, the applicability of the calibration equation was verified to both of the dried and green leave with enough accuracy. In addition, the TN calibration equation was examined with a low-priced spectroscope in short wavelength region (650-1100nm) to the visible light. The value of RMSEP was 0.25% for the green leaves in the validation of the TN calibration equation. From these results we confirmed that the short near infrared region can be used for handy nutritional diagnosis.<br>
