Abstract

The cyclical relationship between individual and collective social capital is a theoretical stake in the micro-macro linkage problem. On the one hand, the structure of chances and constraints (macro or collective social capital) has some influence on rational actions of individual actors (micro or individual social capital). On the other hand, the accumulation of rational actions (=micro) might generate a new social structure (=macro). This article empirically verified which of these two mechanisms was more credible in the context of tourist destination development, using the survey data of Japanese hot-springs resorts. The results showed the validity of the former process (macro to micro). This finding suggests the difficulty of theoretical explanations of micro to macro mechanism.
