In Okinawa, southwestern islands of Japan, the meat goats were investigated for their management system, morpho-genetic characters, body size and correlations among thirteen body parts. The meat goats were classified into three groups: native, ordinary and Saanen goats. Saanen has been introduced from Honshu, mainly Nagano prefecture. The frequencies of appearance of six morpho-genetic characters were checked from 1, 459 goats which were over about four months old. Body measurements of thirteen different parts were recorded in 783 individuals which had been raised in the islands of Okinawa, Iheya, Izena, Aguni, Zamami, Kume, Miyako, Ishigaki and Yonaguni. Of these animals, 733 were females of over one year old and 50 were mature or immature males. The result is summarized as follows. 1) Most of the goats in these islands have been kept in barn and pegged to a rope of about one metre. In some islands, the management methods were applications of penbarn, and tethering or grazing in natural grassland. 2) Native goats have black or brown spots, horns, beard and supernumearary teats, but not wattles. The phenotypic frequencies of colored, wattles, horns and supernumerary teats in ordinary and Saanen goats were 13, 0; 29, 47; 61, 35 and 37, 12%, respectively. Then, ordinary and Saanen goats appearing with beard were 68, 83% in females and 86, 100% in males. Intersex found was 1.3% in ordinary goats. 3) The average withers height, oblique body length, chest girth and body weight for native, ordinary and Saanen goat females were 52, 57, 69; 58, 63, 75; 67, 74, 87cm and 22, 31, 51kg, respectively. Differences of every body measurements among native, ordinary and Saanen goats were statistically significant. 4) The phenotypic correlations calculated between every possible pairs of thirteen traits in ordinary goats were significantly high, while the correlations in Saanen were relatively lower than those in ordinary goats. 5) The average dressing percentages (including skin) measured at a local commercial slaughter house were 48 and 53% for both females and males of Okinawa meat goats. Goat meat is important as animal-protein source for the people of Okinawa islands. The meat has been used as soup and slices of raw meat (sashimi).
