In the preparation of N-free diets for rabbits for some experimental purpose, it is most important but difficult to make then fit for their taste.
The authors investigated the cramming method for rabits to feed the constant amounts of N-free diets without regard for their taste and carried some nitrogen balance experiments.
1 The cramming method. The ingredients of the diets ought to be pulverized finely and to make paste with some warm water, because the rabbits are obliged to swallow them without mastication.
The cramming apparatus devised by the authors is shown in Fig. 1.
When the pipe part (A) is put into the mouth of a rabbit, the end point of it will reach near the throat, then paste diets brought on the disk part (B) should be pushed into the throat with the stick (C) little by little.
The faults of this method are as follows: (a)Not to permit the animals to masticate, (b) ought to decide the amounts of the feed fit for their requirements, and (c) to take much time for feeding.
However, it is very convenient that one can satisfactorily force the same amounts of the diet every day by this method.
2 The nitrogen balance experiments of rabbits on some N-free diets resulted as follows: When the animals were fed on pulverized filter paper only, the anounts of their urinary N excretion were nearly same as those of the fasting ones, and the amount of the metabolic N in feces per gram dry matter consumed was very high.
When fed on N-free diet containing enough calories for their requirements, the data of their endogenous urinary N was almost in accordance with those reported by MITCHELL, but the amounts of their metabolic N in feces was about two times larger than those reported by MITCHELL.
