Previously, the authors indicated the presence of typespecific typical antibodies in serum and colostrum of the sensitized sow, which are responsible for the hemolytic disease in pigs. Further, it was reported that the interaction of anti-S7 with S7 red cells controlled by a simple gene can cause the disease.
Apart from these findings, a crossbred sow kept at the Fukuoka Livestock Breeding Stationthat had given birth to pigs affected with hemolytic disease was transferred to our experiment station to allow a wider study of the disease.
So, studies were conducted clinically, hematologically and serologically. Two litters of pigs which she farrowed were examined.
1) In all pigs, the pallor was marked and icterus was evident though never very marked. However, pigs were not entirely dead.
2) The values of erythrocyte and hematocrit in pigs declined to any appreciable extent with advancing age. Serum color from pigs became cherry-red, but agglutinated red cells were not visible at any time.
3) The serum and colostrum titers of the sow were low by the tube-centrifuge test and considerably higher by the indirect Coombs test. And also, reaction obtained with red cells from pigs collected 10hr after starting to nurse indicated that antibodies were present on cells; namely, the sensitization was visible in the direct Coombs test, but not in the direct tubecentrifuge test.
4) From these facts, it disclosed that the natural occurrence of hemolytic disease of newborn pigs from a sow available for this study resulted from atypical antibodies.
