抄録

The rate of secretion of parotid saliva and metabolic activity of parotid gland slices were studied in young calves. Six Holstein calves were fed with milk only (M) and six received milk, hay and grain (MHG). Two respective calves from both groups were sacrificed at the age of 1, 4 and 13 weeks respectively, after measuring the rates of secretion of parotid gland. Aerobic consumption of added substrates of acetate, propionate, butyrate and glucose was measured, and in parallel experiment the oxidative respiration was manometrically measured in WARBURG flasks under addition of acetate or glucose.<br>1. The rate of secretion increased markedly in MHG calves while no development of salivary secretion was observed in M calves.<br>2. The uptake of acetate increased with age greater in MHG calves than in M calvesThe utilization of glucose did not developed in either group.<br>3. The effect of acetate on raising the respiration developed in MHG calves with the development of endogenous respiration, but it was little and undeveloped in M calves as compared with MHG calves. Any effect of glucose to raise the respiration was not observed in any calves at all ages.
