Abstract

This experiment was conducted to clarify the effectiveness of a prostaglandin F analogue (Fenprostalene: FP) for inducing parturition in swine. 273 Pregnant gilts and sows were injected subcutaneously with saline solution (control) or 0.25, 0.5, 1.0mg of FP, which has a much longer biological hatflife than prostaglandin F and other its analogues, on Days 111, 112, 113 and 114 of gestation (Day 0=the day of last mating).
In the interval from the treatment to the delivery of the first piglet, no significant difference was found between control (25-48 hrs) and 0.25 mg groups (21-51hrs), but 0.5mg (14-24hrs) and 1.0mg groups (11-28hrs) were significantly shorter (p<0.01) than the control groups. The interval was about 24 or 12hrs in groups subjected to 0.5 or 1.0mg injection on Days 111-113 and Day 114, respectively. Non significant differences were found in the time required to expel the litter, litter size, still born piglets, birth and weaning weight, and interval from weaning to onset of estrus between FP treated and control groups. FP was absorbed rapidly into the blood, and high concentrations of FP metabolite (RS-63377) were detected at 2-9hrs after the treatment on Day 113. FP caused a decrease in the plasma concentration of progesterone, and consequently, farrowing was induced.
The result of this study shows that FP O, 5-1.Omg induces farrowing on Days ll1-114 of gestation in swine.
