The experiment was conducted to clarify the influence of fumaric acid administration to the rumen fermentation of goats. The rumen pH, VFA fermentation and fiber digestion were focussed and the fumaric acid metabolism by rumen microorganisms was studied in in vitro. Three rumen-cannulated goats were given two diets containing crashed corn 20% or 50% (diet 1 and 2), in which fumaric acid was added in the level of 0, 2.5 or 5%. The feed was offered with an automatic feeder in the interval of 6 hrs for 3 weeks. At the final week the nylon bag method using pulpflock, a fiber preparation, for measuring the activity of fiber digestion in the rumen was carried out, and the pH and VFA concentration of the rumen fluid were detected 4 times before feeding. The rumen fluid was incubated anaerobically and the rate of metabolism of fumaric acid added was measured with a platinum electrode Eh meter. The rumen pH changed with a trend of rise as the level of fumaric acid administration increased in both cases of diet 1 and 2. This fact suggests that the fumaric acid added to the feed stimulates saliva secretion. The administration of fumaric acid changed the molar proportion of VFA in the rumen. The proportion of acetic and propionic acids increased and those of higher acids decreased. Such a VFA profile seems to be peculiar to the fumaric acid administration. The results on the disappearance of fiber from nylon bags indicated indirectly that the fumaric acid administration has a possibility of promoting microbial function of cellulose digestion in the case of feeding diet 1. The in vitro study indicated that there occurred a microbial adaptation of fumaric acid metabolism in the rumen when the fumaric acid was adimistered.
