The present study was undertaken to determine whether the changes in rectal temperature, and heart and respiration rates during the preparturient period in cows could be utilized for the estimation of the onset time of parturition. Seventeen Holstein cows held on public farms in Osaka Prefecture were used. Inspection was made on 30 (±5) and 15 (±5) days before the estimate time of parturition and every day from 7 days before to the day of term. Rectal temperature was recorded twice a day at 9a.m. (±30min) and 4p.m. (±30min). Heart and respiration rates were recorded once a day at 9a.m. (±30min). There was a marked diurnal variation in rectal temperature, and the value in the evening was higher than that in the morning. The change along with the progress of pregnancy was larger in the evening temperature than in the morning. In 64.7% of animals, the temperature fell below 39.0°C at evening within 2 days before parturition. A depression of the temperature by 0.5°C or more from the value on the previous day occured in 47.1% of animals at evening within 2 days before parturition. Fall in the temperature below 39.0°C was more useful for the prediction of parturition time than the depression from the level on the previous day. A marked increase in heart rate was observed between days 1 and 0 before the parturition in all cows. The measured value, however, was unreliable as the index for the prediction of the time of parturition because of its large variation among individual cows. So, the value on each day was transformed to the ratio to that at 30 days before parturition of the same animal. The ratio thus obtained increased to 1.3 or more in 88.2% of animals within 2 days before parturition. In respiration rate, little change was observed in either the absolute value or the ratio, and those were not valuable for the prediction of parturition time.
