We have encountered 5 cases of multiple cancer of the large intestine at this hospital over the last 4 years and 6 months. This paper reports the results of our clinico-pathologic studies of these cases along with a discussion with reference to the literature. As for the number of cancerous lesions, there were 2 cases with 2 lesions and 3 cases with not less than 3 lesions. As for the lesion site, the lesions were distributed over the entire large intestine. All the cases also had adenomatous polyp, which numbered 13. Of these, 6 had cancerous lesions concurrently. With regard to the depth of mural invasion, the 1st cancer was a progressive one showing pm or more, and the incidence of early cancer, particularly m cancer, was high in and after the 3rd cancer. Complication with cancer involving other organs was observed in 2 cases, the organ involved being the stomach in both cases. Cases of synchronous or chronotropic multiple cancer of the large intestine showed a family history of cancer. Multiple cancer of the large intestine, particularly in cases of early cancer where the lesion is located on the oral side of progressive cancer, is difficult to diagnose by preoperative examination. For this reason, endoscopy during surgery was useful, and quick diagnosis by polypectomy was effective for determining the surgical technique.
