Abstract

Among 2314 patients with colorectal carcinoma seen at A.C.C.H. from Dec. 1964 to Dec. 1985, 40 patients (1.7 %) were less than 30 years old. The mean age was 25 years and a male female ratio was 2 : 1. The major symptoms were rectal bleeding, alternative bowel habits and abdominal pain. The duration of the symptoms was 5 months on the average and a rate of curative operation was 66 %. These results showed no differences from those in over-all colorectal carcinoma. A 5-year survival rate after curative operation in patients under age 30 was 70 %, which was slightly less than that in the overall series. The outcome of the patients was either death within 3 years or survival after 5 years of treatment. However, no significant differences were noted between these two groups on the symptoms and the duration of the symptoms. The incidence of more advanced tumor than Dukes C and mucinous adenocarcinoma which were more aggressive in biologic behavior was higher in young patients than in overall patients with corolectal carcinoma. These were considered as factors of poorer prognosis in young patients. <BR>A better prognosis will be expected for even young patients with colorectal carcinoma, if they consult a doctor soon after noticing blood in the stools.
