Abstract

Most of the colorectal carcinoma is adenocarcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma is very rare. Four patients who underwent operations because of colorectal undifferentiated carcinoma from 1972 to 1987 were analyzed. The lesions were distributed at the cecum (1 case), ascending colon (1), transverse colon (1), and rectum (1). Regional lymph nodes were involved in one case. All cases were resected curatively, and they are still alive without any evidence of recurrence after the operations. Histologically, the tumors consisted of relatively uniform cells growing in sheets and trabeculae with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios and few mitotic figures. Mucin stains in all cases were negative. Grimelius-positive granules in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells were found partially in 3 of 4 cases. The nuclear DNA distribution pattern was diploid in all cases. <BR>It has been widely said that histological grading of carcinoma influences its prognosis significantly, but our clinical experimences suggest that colorectal undifferentiated carcinoma does not always have a bad prognosis.
