Physiological and anatomical assessments were preoperatively carried out in 85 patients with colo-rectal cancer in order to evaluate influence of age and sex on the parameters.
The patients were classified into 4 groups : group A (male, less than 59 years of age, n=16), group B (female, less than 59, n=13), group C (male, more than 60, n=33) and group D (female, more than 60, n=23). Resting anal canal pressure in group A was 99.1±21.6cmH2O and significantly greater than those in group B (p<0.02) and C (p<0.01).
Pelvic floor descent in group D was significantly greater than those of group B (p<0.01) and C (p<0.01). Anal canal length was significantly shorter in group B than A (p<0.05), group C than A (p<0.05) and group C than D (p<0.01).
These results suggest that the pelvic floor function in patients with colorectal cancer is influenced by age and sex of the patients at preoperative stage and is especially poor in elder female patients.
