The target is the induction of remission and its maintenance, because no specific treatment is available for Crohn's disease with anal fistura. The effect of total enteral nutrition with an elemental diet (ED) for induction and maintenance ED therapy (Home elemental enteral hyperalimentaion) for prevention of flare-up were examined. Twenty-nine patients with anal fistula and 107, without anal fisula were subjected tototal eneral nutrition with or without conventional drug treatment for induction of remission.<BR>Inactive patients with anal fistula and without anal fistula were 25% and 82% resped-tively. HEEH, with>30kcal of the ED/kg ideal body weight/day and<21g of the dietary fat intake/day, was succcesful for maintenance of remission in 50% of patients with inactive fistula.<BR>These results indicated that nutritional therapy with ED was effective for both induction and maintnance of remission in Crohn's disease with anal fistula.
