True proteins originating from intestinal microbes and related materials in fecal dry matter of mice were investigated. A purified whole-egg protein diet and an amino acid mixture diet with the same amino acid composition as purified whole-egg protein were prepared to have the same levels of nitrogen. These diets were given to ICR strain male conventional and germfree mice from five to eight weeks of age for three weeks. Comparisons were made between the feces of the last week of conventional and germfree mice fed on the two kinds of diets with respect to the contents of true protein (protein nitrogen of feces×6.25) in fecal dry matter. As a result, there was 0.94% true protein from the intestinal microbes and related materials in fecal dry matter of mice fed on the purified wholeegg protein diet and 2.18% true protein in that of mice fed on the amino acid mixture diet. Furthermore, 5.1% true protein from the debris of the epithelium of the alimentary canal and digestive juice and 1.23% true protein from undigestible food residue were observed.
