284 stored serum samples from long-term followed 49 patients with Sashima epidemic hepatitis were tested for antibody to hepatitis C virus (HCVAb) using Ortho HCVAb ELISA test system. Among 27 patients with sustained abnormalities of GOT and/or GPT for 20 years or more, 9 (33.3%) seroconverted from positive to negative, whereas 14 (51.9%) remained positive. In 22 whose transaminases were normalized within 20 years, 10 (45.5%) lost their seropositivity but 7 (31.8%) had a persistent seropositivity. Mean duration from the onset of the disease to the time of seroconversion was 15.4±6.0 years. Initially measured HCVAb titer, represented with optical density (OD), was related to the persistency of HCVAb but not to the outcome of GOT, GPT.
