Solid fraction fluctuation in a solid/liquid mixing tank has been analysed theoretically in view of mass balance, and verified experimentally in a snow feeder, which mixes snow with water by stirring and feeds it into the snow transportation pipeline. When lumps of snow are inermittently fed into the mixing tank and the resulting mixture is continuously discharged, the solid traction plotted against time on the horizontal axis fluctuates in the shape of saw teeth. A snow feeder should be designed so that the maximum value may not exceed the the critical snow fraction of stirring. This theory has been expressed as follows:<BR>Q2T/M≥-1n{1-Ws/(Mfs*)}<BR>where Q2 is the delivery of the pump, T the time interval of snow feeding, M the total mass in the tank, Ws the mass of a snow lump, and fs* the critical snow fraction. It has also been shown that the relation gives a set of Q2 and M for a given condition of snow removel when it is combined with a calculation for the minimum cost.
