In the presence of hydrogen peroxide titanium does not form oxinate and is not extracted with chloroform at a pH above 8, while aluminum can be quantitatively extracted with this solvent in the form of oxinate without being affected by hydrogen peroxide at the pH range 4.5?10.7, and under the same conditions iron can also be extracted quantitatively. Making use of these properties micro amounts of aluminum and iron can be simply separated from relatively large amounts of titanium by chloroform extraction of their oxinates, and be simultaneously determined by the photometry of this extract. The outline of the procedure is as follows. To approximately 70 ml of acidic sample solution containing not more than 20 mg of TiO2, 100 μg of Al2O3, and 150 μg of Fe2O3, add 3 ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide and the proper amount of ammonium hydroxide solution to adjust the pH to 1?2, and qf ter cooling add 3 ml of 1% oxine solution and then adjust the pH to 8.0?10.7 with ammonium hydroxide solution. The resulting solution is transfered to a separatory funnel and after the volume is brought to 100 ml, the extraction is made with exactly 10 ml of chloroform; and then by measuring the absorbency of the dried extract at 390 and 470 mμ, both aluminum and iron can be determined simultaneously [cf. K. Motojima, J. Chem. Soc.. Japan (Pure Chem. Sect.) 76, 903 (1955)]. By this method more than 0.02 % of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 in TiO2 can be determined rapidly and accurately. In addition, in almost the same man-ner, more than 0.002 % of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 in V2O5 can also be determined rapidly and accurately.
