This study investigated the speech intelligibility of 10 glossectomized patients with reconstruction using the myocutaneous flap, and the effectiveness of speech therapy for four of the patients.<BR>The results of the present study were consistent with those of previous studies except for the relationships between size of excision and intelligibility, and between time elapsed after operation and intelligibility. It was also found that speech therapy was effective for improving intelligibility in two out of the four patients.<BR>Based on these findings, this paper discussed articulation characteristics of glossectomized patients, methodological problems relating to intelligibility judgment, indications of speech therapy and efficacy of speech therapy.
