The horticulture of vegetables and flowering plants forms special regions which have specific characteristics. Farmers in these regions have selected the species of products by competition among each other. With the mass production of special flowers by farmers sinc 1960, it has seemed that production for special flowers are fixed to special places. At the same time, the areal differentiations in the same region have been distinct and have brought the regional characteristics to each place.
The object of this paper is to make clear the regional characteristics and the differentiation between the right and left bank of the river Kawazu, Izu peninsula. This paper is a part of the study of the regional development and differentiation in horticulture regions.
The results obtained are as follows:
1 Iris which are cultivated by hotsprings and water are the main product on the right bank of lower region of river Kawazu. Carnations which are cultivated by vinyl-houses and chrysanthemums which are cultivated with no covering are the main products on the left bank. So we can see the contrast between the landscapes in winter of both sides of the river.
2 The main product of farms on the left bank is chrysanthemums which are cultivated with no covering. Many farmers on the right bank rent the land on the left bank and grow carnation in vinyl-houses.
3 Iris, carnations and roses were introduced by a leader from the outside and were developed by him.
4 There are four stages in forming horticulture region: the stage of iris growing before the War II, the atage of reconstruction of iris growing after the war II, the stage of the rise of horticulture and the stage of the development of horticulture.
5 The physical factors of regional differences are as follows:
A areas which have hotsprings and underground water on the right bank are fitted to the growing of iris, and areas which have well drained paddy fields on the sunny left bank which are capable of rotation of crops are fitted to the equipmental horticulture of carnations.
6 The present differences of agricultural management are not evident from the view of statics, but there are some differences of the base of agricultural management which brought a difference of the thinking of flower horliculture in the each stage of its development By this reason the regional contrasts between both sides of the river have been formed historically.
