A total of 78 fifth grade elementary school boys and girls were classified into Group A (41 pupils) and Group B (37 pupils). Group A was instructed to brush their teeth with a certain brand of dentifrice, while Group B was instructed to use another brand of dentifrice for a period of one month. The degree of dental surface cleanness on their part and their PMA indices during this period were examined.<BR>At the end of this one-month experiment, it was revealed that Group A used a dentifrice containing 2.5% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHDG in this particular case, a commercial product by Swiss Hawe-Noes Dental Company under the name of Plak Out), whereas Group B used one which simply contained a placebo. The degree of dental surface cleanness improved proportionally to the passage of time. Between 15 days and 30 days, there was a statistical difference in favor of CHDG containing dentifrice at a risk level of 1%.<BR>Although PMA indices were not so definite as the degree of surface cleanness, Group A came to show a slightly better tendency as compared with Group B with the passage of times. At the end of 30 days, the former statistically exceeded the latter at a risk level of 5%. There were no complaints of ill effect during the experimental period.
