Abstract

The purpose of this study was to survey the status of caries prevalence in 3-year-old children for 5 years from 1975 to 1979 and to investigate the relationship between the status of caries prevalence and the educational environment and the childcare education by a health center in Fukuoka.
1) The percentage of 3-year-old children who received a medical examiniation and of treated teeth significantly increased year by year and the percentage of caries prevalence and number of df teeth per person significantly decreased. Marked change in caries severity was not recognized during the 5 years.
2) Caries prevalence in first-born children was lower than other children and the percentage of treated teeth of children not attending kindergarten and children living with grandparents was higher than that of kindergarteners and children without grandparents.
3) The difference of caries prevalence, number of df teeth per person and percentage of treated teeth in 1975 vs. 1979 were studied in the following 2 areas. One was a residential area consisting of 6 blocks (one block is defined as an area having one primary school) with frequent child care education and the other was a commercial area consisting of 7 blocks. The caries prevalence and number of df teeth per person improved at a higher rate in the residential area.
