  • The Analysis of the 2000 General Election Based on the Special Nature of the Single-seat Districts

抄録

The aim of this paper is to examine two hypotheses with regard to the results of the 2000 General Election: One is that a distinct difference existed between urban and rural areas, and the other that a substantial relationship could be observed between the attribute data of the winners in the single-seat districts and regional characteristics. This paper discusses a principal component analysis on 26 variables that represent population, industry, and so on, and subsequently a classification of the single-seat districts based on regional characteristics. The 2000 General Election was analyzed using an extracted axis of cities vs. countries as a criterion.<br>The results brought to the following three findings: First, a sharp contrast in urban areas existed between the Democratic Party which won local landslide victories and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party which suffered local landslide defeats. Second, the proportion of voters in the urban areas rose rapidly against that in the rural areas, considerably influencing the election results. And third, the comparison of attribute data of the winning candidates produced distinct differences between the urban and rural areas, causing a slight sign of change in the structure of the legislature.
