Abstract

This paper reviews the tephrochronological study of the middle to late Pleistocene tephras in and around the Japaneses Alps, central Japan, and discusses several problems that remain to be solved. Stratigraphy and distributions of the late Pleistocene plinian fall-out tephras and widespread tephras have mostly been clarified. However, the Tt-D tephra derived from the Tateyama caldera in the Hida Mountains and the Aso-3 tephra from the Aso caldera in the Kyushu Islands are subjects for detailed chronological studies in relation to climatic fluvial terraces and glacial fluctuation along the rivers in and around the Hida Mountains around the Marine Isotope Stage 5e. On the other hand, although stratigraphy and distributions of middle Pleistocene tephras have not yet been revealed in detail, recent works have clarified those of the Iz-KT a tephra (MIS 5/6), Omachi-APm tephra beds (340-410ka), and KMT tephra (580-690ka). In order to achieve applicative studies, such as establishment of long-term eruptive histories of volcanoes and developments of basins and mountains, and chronological study of sediments, studies of local tephras that erupted in this age are needed.
