The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of the density and the composition of personal networks on the support and the strain from the networks among women during child-rearing. The results of analyzing the survey data from 373 mothers living in Gifu City conducted in 2003 are as follows. (1) The higher density of the network, the more availability of the support. (2) When the network is mainly composed by persons acquainted through children, the availability of the support for child-rearing is high, but the availability of the support to fulfill the mother's needs is low. (3) The composition of the network influences the level of strain. The level of strain is high when the network is mainly composed with those acquainted through children. These findings indicate that the policy to promote the mother's network is effective to improve the availability of the support, but this policy alone is not enough. It is important for women to maintain interpersonal relations away from the motherrole during child rearing
