Small caliber arterial prosthesis with two different mechanical properties and with 3 mm ID were implanted into the bilateral common carotid arteries of 20 mongrel dogs and the calcium deposits in the removed patent grafts were analyzed using EDX micro-analysis. Water porosity of the segmented polyurethane was found to mainly affect formation of pseudointima and calcification in the prosthesis. Moreover, pseudointima and its dystrophia have a major role in the deposits of calcium. Therefore, the size of water porosity of segmented polyurethane vascular prosthesis was found to be a major factor in tissue healing.
