• Factors Determining Use of Compost in Suburban Areas by Farmers

抄録

A questionnaire survey was circulated among farmers in Sapporo City asking them to clarify their awareness of and use of compost. Factors that led to their decision to use compost were analyzed, and measures for promoting uses of compost that were acceptable to farmers in suburban areas were also investigated.
About 53% of the farmhouses in Sapporo City use compost to increase crop yields and improve soil quality despite the hard work involved in applying it. At the same time, most of them are also using chemical fertilizers. The compost being used is mostly made of livestock excreta from cattle farms or from fertilizer manufacturers. It was found that the top reason farmers did not use compost was concern about compost raw materials, the second reason was the hard labor involved in using compost, and the third reason was uncertainty about the actual effects of using it. The study clearly indicates that farmers who are not using compost at present would want to use cheaper compost made from reliable materials such as livestock excreta, and compost that requires the bare minimum of labor for application.
There are three important criteria for the promotion of compost utilization by farmers in suburban areas: use of livestock excreta as the main raw material; development of coordination between cattle farmers who make the compost and field farmers who use it; and sharing of information, such as knowledge about compost application, through cooperation between farmers who have used compost and those who have not.
