Abstract

Studies were carried out on the decay of milk teeth and the eruption of permanent teeth in the Japanese house bat, Pipistrellus abramus using 89 specimens. The specimens were collected from three localities in Kagawa Prefecture, from July through August, 1971-76. The dental formula of milk teeth and permanent teeth was 2/3, 1/1, 2/2 and 2/3, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, respectively. The biginning of the decay and eruption was about the 14th day and the 8th day after birth, respectively. The termination of decay and eruption was the 30th day after birth, when young first emerges from its nest to feed. The following sequences of the decay and eruption were observed in each jaw: decay, dpm2-dpml- (dc·dil) -di2, (dil·dpm2) -di2-di3-dpml-dc; eruption, (Ml·M2) - (I2.M3) - (C·PM2) -PM4-I3, (Ml·M2) -I1-M3- (C·PM4) - (I2·I3·PM2) . The time of the termination of the teeth replacement was earlier in lower jaw than in upper jaw in all specimens.
