Surgery has been performed in 64 cases of lateral type hypertensive intracerebral hematoma for the past two years. The operative results are as follows. Twenty two patients (34%) died, 14 cases (22%) are doing nothing but lying in the bed, 5 patients need help in action and 23 cases show trivial or no neurological deficit. The size of hematomas and complications, such as renal failure, hepatic dysfunction and severe diabetes mellitus, have been studied in relation to the operative results in 52 cases in whom record is complete. It is clear that the size of hematomas is a determining factor in prognosis and postoperative nervous function. Since it is convinced that complication has close relation with the postoperative results, diagnosis and appropriate treatment of complication are important in cases of hypertensive intracerebral hematoma.
