Relations between Gas-Phase Stepwise and Bulk Solvation of Cl− with Water and Aliphatic Alcohols

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Higher order clustering reactions of Cl− with H2O and ROH for ROH=CH3OH, C2H5OH, and n-C3H7OH were measured in the gas phase with the pulsed electron-beam mass spectrometer. The general trend is found that the obtained −ΔHn−1,n° and −ΔSn−1,n° increase in the order H2O&lt;CH3OH&lt;C2H5OH&lt;n-C3H7OH. This order is just the opposite to the free energies of solvation of Cl−. This is due to the increasingly more unfavorable entropy changes for the solvation of Cl− in the order H2O&lt;CH3OH&lt;C2H5OH&lt;n-C3H7OH. This is clearly manifested on the increasing entropy changes −ΔSn−1,n° for the measured gas-phase clustering reactions for higher alcohols.</jats:p>
