The goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects of inhaled anticholinergic agent on ventilatory function and on bronchial hyperresponsiveness to hypertonic saline. Ipratropium bromide (IB) or placebo aerosol were administered into the airways using spacer in 11 asymptomatic asthmatic children with single blind and randomized-crossover fashion.
Decreased MMF and V50observed in these asymptomatic children were significantly improved 30min after IB (40μg) inhalation, but not after placebo.
Airway challenge of hypertonic saline was performed according to the method of Anderson's. Provocative dose of 3.6% hypertonic saline causing a 20% fall in FEV1.0.(PD20) become significantly higher 30min after the pretreatment with IB than that after placebo. These findings suggest that cholinergic pathways might play a role in the mechanism of small airway narrowing and nonspecific bronchial responsiveness in asymptomatic asthmatic children.
