The annual numbers of outpatients (2, 140 cases) and of acute hospitalization (1, 005 cases) in 1988 were 4.6 times and 8.3 times respectively than those (466 and 121 cases) in 1975 in the Pediatric Division of the National Minami-Fukuoka Chest Hospital. There was, however, one case of asthma death per year, and the majority of deaths occured at own home or on the way to the hospital. These observations show the great advancement in medical science and treatment to control asthmatic attack in children
Seventy-three percent of deaths from asthma, however, was sudden death in adolescence (11/15 cases). These data show the difficulty in controlling the adolescent asthma with psycho-socio-economical problems.
The prognosis of children with severe and intractable asthma is not satisfactory, besides mortality. The percentage of complete remission and death from asthma over 20 years after onset of asthma are 40.9%, 5.4% respectively.
The method and technique to treat asthma has really improved. The children with severe asthma, however, have tremendous number of problems such as influence of medication for long period, an obstacle for school attendance or employment, poor comprehension about asthma in home and society, etc.
It is considered that total care from the social stand point of view is essentially to them.
