Abstract

Five newborn Holstein calves with neurologic signs were presented to the Animal Medical Center at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine between December 2011 and March 2012. All the calves were born in a farm in Tokachi District, Hokkaido. These calves showed neurological signs such as tremor, ataxia or difficulties in standing up, wide stance and intention tremors that suggested cerebellar anomaly. Hematological and the biochemical profiles did not show remarkable abnormalities except for low gamma globulinemia and hypocholesterolemia. Postmortem examination revealed leukodystrophy in the central nervous system(CNS), but macroscopic abnormalities such as cerebellar dysplasia were not observed in any case. Common histopathological findings were hypomyelination in the white matter across the CNS and astroglial growth. The gene segments of bovine viral diarrhea virus(BVDV)type-1 were detected by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction from blood samples of all 5 cases. BVDV was also isolated from the blood of 2 of the cases. These results suggest that the cerebellar signs observed in the present cases were due to hypomyelination, a rare symptom of the BVDV prenatal infection.
