Abstract

Amyloid deposit of the thyroid gland is observed in systemic or local amyloidosis, or medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. When the presence of amyloid can be proved by fine needle aspiration cytology, diagnosis of the above diseases is easily established.
This paper reports the demonstration of amyloid deposit in the amyloid goiter and medullary carcinomas of the thyroid by fine needle aspiration cytology.
With the Papanicolaou's method, amyloid, which is stained light green in color, is observed as an amorphous, acellular, homogeneous mass of 50-600μm. In the center of large deposits, thread ball-like fibrils are seen. The presence of amyloid deposit can be confirmed by Congo red stain after decolorization by diluted hydrochloric acid alcohol solution, and by greenigh birefringence under polarized light.
