We experienced a case of amtrix-producing carcinoma (MPC) of the breast, which is a specific subtype of breast cancer, associated with osteocartilaginous metaplasia.
A 55-year-old woman underwent a mastectomy for breast cancer at the hospital in January 1999, which was histopathologically diagnosed as solid-tubular carcinoma with chondromyxoid metaplasia.
One year and 10 months after the operation, she experienced lung metastasis and underwent a wedge resection for the metastatic lesion at another hospital. It was diagnosed as lung metastasis of MPC.
When we reviewed histopathological features of the primary lesion, those features were compatible with the histologic picture of MPC proposed by Wargotz and others. It is inferred that matrix-producing cells might originate from epithelial cells on the basis of immunohistochemical studies, and that the cells might have characters like myoepithelial cells because a part of tumor cells directly adjacent to cartilage matrix gave positive response to CD10.
