Studies were made on the effects of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) on the implantation of fertilized ova and maintenance of pregnancy in bitches. Twenty-four experimental bitches were given 5-50mg of PGF2α. The effects of PGF2α were estimated from the condition of the uterus examined by laparotomy, the time of parturition, and the peripheral blood level of progesterone. The implantation was confirmed in all of eight bitches given 5-30mg of PGF2α in 5-17 days of pregnancy (early stage). In four of these bitches given 20mg or more, there was a remarkable decrease in the progesterone level and death occurred in some or all of the embryos after implantation. Seven bitches were given 5-50mg of PGF2α in 25-51 days of pregnancy (middle stage). As a result, pregnancy was maintained, without causing abortion, in all of them except the one given 20mg of PGF2α in 51 days of pregnancy gave premature birth. Nine bitches were given 5-10mg of PGF2α in 55-58 days of pregnancy (late stage). As a result, parturition was induced in all of them except one in 38.1 hours on the average after administration or in 55.5-60.0 days of pregnancy. Accordingly, there was a reduction in gestation period in these eight bitches. Moreover, in bitches given PGF2α during pregnancy the period between the parturition and the recurrence of estrus was about 40 days, being shorter than that in untreated control bitches.
