抄録

The process of band structure formation which occurs abruptly at the upper yield stress has been observed in polycrystalline iron with a high speed camera of 400 frames/s. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The width and propagation speed of the band across the specimen cross-section are almost constant in the strain rate range in which the upper yield stress is insensitive to strain rate. (2) The width of the band at the beginning of deformation coincides with that of the affected zone formed around each individual deformed grain. (3) The propagation speed of the band increases with decreasing grain size of the specimens. (4) The spring constant of the stretching system does not affect the formation process of the band, though it strongly affects the sidewise propagation of the band along the specimen axis, i.e. the propagation of the Lüders band front.
