抄録

The recovery of lead from scrap lead batteries and battery sludge by the pyrometallurgical treatment process is generally accompanied by the emissions of sulfur dioxide gas and lead-containing particles into the atmosphere. Those products are undesirable, as they lead to serious environmental problems.
In an effort to overcome these difficulties, a new hydrometallurgical treatment process of battery sludge was investigated. In the present contribution, the feasibility of the new hydrometallurgical process has been evaluated from a thermodynamic and an experimental aspect, based on the experimental results obtained on the selective leaching of PbSO4 in battery sludge, the recovery of lead carbonate, the reduction of PbO2 with SO2 gas, the stoichiometry of the reactions and the X-ray analysis of the reaction products.
From the thermodynamic consideration and the experimental studies for the new hydrometallurgical treatment process of battery sludge, it would appear that the new hydrometallurgical process is available. Further, this method would eliminate environmental problems related to air pollution by the emissions of sulfur dioxide and lead-containing dust and water pollution which are associated with conventional lead recovery processes.
