We report a case of malignant melanoma initially diagnosed as occult breast cancer and review the relevant literature. A 55-year-old woman presented with enlargement of the right axillary nodes at Sakura Hospital (Department of Internal Medicine) in July 2002. Aspiration biopsy cytology of the nodes was performed, and the results suggested a diagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma. The patient elected to seek further evaluation at another hospital. No abnormal findings were noted in mammography, ultrasonography of the breast, abdomen and pelvis, chest X-ray, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or total colonoscopic examination at that hospital. Occult cancer of the breast was suspected, and the patient was referred to the Department of Surgery at Sakura Hospital.<br> An excisional biopsy of the right axillary nodes was performed on November 16, 2003; the pathological diagnosis was malignant melanoma. A review of the patient's past medical history revealed that she had noticed moles on her right elbow and in the middle of her eyebrows at age 45 but they had spontaneously disappeared.
