Historical reconstruction of aquatic environment has been a matter of interest in Tokyo, although exact data on water chemistry and waterscape were short before the World War II. Many valuable descriptions on water environment can be found in literary works, documents on local history and statistics. Map is also useful to be referred.<BR>The author focuses on the discription in literary works, such as novels, essays and poems. Expressions on biological and visual water environment expressions in literary works were referred to water quality standard at present. Analyzing each sentence, water quality in the past has been classified into three categories.<BR>Based on this procedure, historical water environment in Tokyo around 1920 and 1940 was reconstructed as grid map. As seen from Figure 2 and Figure 3, numbers of grid of clear unpolluted water area were 24 in 1920's, but it decreased to 13 in 1940's. Numbers of grid of slightly polluted water area were 186 in 1920's, but it decreased to 150 in 1940's. Numbers of grid of polluted water area were 56 in 1920's, while it increased to 113 in 1940's. These results shows the process of being polluted before the World War II in Tokyo.
