Color vision examinations were given to 296 color vision defectives, 35 protanopias, 46 protanomalias, 122 deuteranopias and 93 deuteranomalias, during the period from 1986 to 1990 at the Division of Ophthalmology, Aichi Prefectural Center of Health Care. The extent of color vision defect was examined with AO H-R-R Plates (H-R-R), Tokyo Medical College Color Vision Test (TMC), Ohkuma's Winding-line Plates (Ohkuma), Ichikawa's color perception lantern and Farnsworth Dichotomous Test Panel D-15 (D-15). Seventy-two of 296 subjects were diagnosed with the same degree of color vision defect by H-R-R, TMC and Ohkuma Plates, while 41 showed a different severity with each test. The three plates have their own characteristic trends for grading the extent of color vision defect. H-R-R diagnosed only a small number of both protans and deutans as strong defect while TMC indicated all dichromats to have a strong defect. Ohkuma Plates tended to give a milder diagnosis than the actual one among protans, but a severer diagnosis than warranted by the facts among deutans. Ninety-seven percent of dichromats and 23% of anomalous trichromats showed failing scores with D-15, which distinguishes the functionally color blind from the moderately color defective and normal. Most dichromats showed the typical failing patterns, while many anomalous trichromats the atypical ones.
