Six low vision children with anxieties about their coming school lives were evaluated with the reading speed before entering school. To decide the critical threshold for reading, we compared font sizes in school textbooks. Their main causes of impaired vision were congenital cataract and congenital glaucoma. At the first ophthalmological examination, the visual acuity of the dominant eye was 0.4 to 0.06. The needs of these children were to find out whether they can keep up with classes and which level of care about reading, photophobia, walking, and far vision will be provided them with school.<br>We provided them with optical aid guidance, prescriptions and information. All the children have entered normal schools with the assistance of their escorts. Now, the children also attend special assistance classes at school for the blind once a month. Among all the subjects, the maximum reading speed ranged from 33.62 to 74.76 characters per minute, and the critical threshold of character sizes ranged from 43.99 to 11.05 points. The maximum reading speed of twelve first-year elementary school students with normal vision was 154.49±19.11 characters per minute. The smallest font size in the first year elementary school textbooks is 12.8 points. Our results obtained from examining low-vision reading performance revealed a facet of visual function that cannot be perceived only with visual acuity tests. We found that the examination is useful in an objective evaluation of reading performance of pre-school children with low vision.
