Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It is a great honor for me to have an opportunity to address at an opening the 1987 JAPAN TAPPI Annual Meeting.<BR>This year is the 40th anniversary of JAPAN TAPPI. I am pleased to learn that we have about 500 attendants gathering at this meeting here in Hachinohe City today, even though our institution had a series of big events such as the memorial ceremony and the memorial lecture recently.<BR>This year, we will have special lectures. “The Technology of Developing New Grades of Apples” by Mr. Kudo, Manager of Aomori Apple Experiment Station, and “Super Conductivity” by Professor Fueki of the Faculty of Engineering of Tokyo University. In addition, we have 10 presentations by the participants and also exhibitors' explanations about their products which are scheduled at another hall as a new attempts. I hope that this meeting will be a fruitful opportunity for your mutual communication and technological research.<BR>On this occasion, I as the president of JAPAN TAPPI, would like to direct my remarks on several issues surrounding the pulp and paper industry.
