GdxY1-xCa4O (BO3)3 (GdYCOB) has been grown by the Czochralski technique and characterized for harmonic generator of a Nd: YAG laser. Increase of Gd concentration in GdYCOB makes the birefringence small; therefore the solid solution GdYCOB gradually changes the phase-matching angles of type-I third- and type-II second-harmonic generation (THG and SHG) to (θ, φ) = (90°, 90°). Third-harmonic light was generated by mixing between 1.064- and 0.532-μm lights. This material is noncritically phase matchable for THG (x=0.28) and SHG (x=0.275) at room temperature. The effective nonlinear coefficient was found to be 0.55 pm/V for THG and 0.35 pm/V for SHG. Angular properties such as angular acceptances and walk-off angle are drastically improved by utilization of noncritical phase matching.
